Are there are raccoons living in your neighbourhood? If so, you should speak with your insurance broker about what protection you have against the damage these mischievous critters may inflict on your property. Home and property damage caused by raccoons is both common and a grey area in many insurance companies but luckily when working with a broker we can help you find the right answers and the right coverage!
What kind of damage can raccoons cause?
Raccoons have a nasty habit of chewing through just about anything they get their teeth on — roofing materials, insulation, wires, pipes and more. Moreover, they like to make dens in attics and crawlspaces. The presence of raccoons in your home can have serious health implications. Raccoons carry disease like rabies and the raccoon roundworm parasite, which can affect both humans and pets.
The latter disease is particularly worrying and 80 per cent of raccoons in North America are infected with it. The eggs from this parasite show up in raccoons’ feces. If inadvertently ingested, the larvae can cause disease, blindness, spinal cord or brain damage or death.
How are raccoons removed from your home?
If raccoons move into your attic or den, you’ll have to call in a pest control company. Unfortunately, evicting raccoons can be expensive. There are a couple reasons for this.
Firstly, it isn’t an easy thing to do. As racoons are neither rodents nor vermin, there are strict rules as to how they can be trapped and transported. Secondly, due to the diseases raccoons carry, the clean-up has to be extensive. In some cases, it may even involve the removal of contaminated attic and duct insulation.
Is raccoon damage covered by insurance?
According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, damage by raccoons isn’t covered by most insurance policies. The same is true of damage by vermin, rodents, birds and insects. Review your policy with your insurance provider to find out for sure.
Note that if raccoons aren’t explicitly named as an excluded peril, you may be covered against raccoon damage. Some policies just exclude damage by vermin and rodents, and technically raccoons are neither. However, in many circumstances, damage by raccoons, even when not explicitly excluded, isn’t covered, as it’s seen as a consequence of poor home maintenance.
It’s always worth speaking with your insurance broker to get precise details about your coverage.
